Really liked this observation: "Psychiatry has fragmented into a bureaucracy of risk management and reimbursement, while society has dismantled every other institution capable of dealing with madness." Aligns with my own sentiments. Powerful post, related to a lot of it (with the exception of the comment about trans identity being delusional)
The passage referring to trans identification as psychosis strengthens the piece by demonstrating that ER physicians, as the author argues, are not trained in psychiatry.
I was with you until the transphobia. I understand: training in sexology and trans care is new or non-existent in many underdeveloped countries. But I would suggest that perhaps concordance between decades of clinical experience and brain imaging studies if the last decade speaks to an underlying variation in being human rather than a delusion with an onset. Or maybe you think those of us with adhd are just lazy and stupid? That ASD patients just need more social punishment to get their act together?
Look, if you, AussieMedStudent, are a genuine person, I mean this from the bottom of my clinician’s heart: stay away from patients until you grow as a person.
Otherwise, troll begone.
Either way, you have gotten more of my time than you’ve earned — bye.
Addendum: on reflection, I think using “they are psychotic” as a smear against patients with ADHD or autism shows a disqualifying lack of empathy towards suffering of patients and I would report a med student engaging in this kind of behaviour to their university for disciplinary action.
If patients with ADHD think they're born in the wrong body and are really high functioning individuals that are born in the wrong body and that need medication for life (paid for by the taxpayer) to sustain their high functioning... Then yes, they too have bought into a woke delusion. But to answer your question, they're psychotic, not lazy and stupid.
A simultaneously powerful and infuriating summary of the state of American mental health un-care. And yes, I agree with you about the trans delusion, but I blame the radical and medical enablers, not the patients. Psychiatry is the only field where you can create a disorder from nothing and be called an expert.
